History :

Ada, Minnesota, located in Norman County, was founded in 1874 and incorporated in 1881. Named after Ada Fisher, daughter of railroad superintendent William H. Fisher, the town emerged as a key stop along the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in the Red River Valley. The Yakama Nation originally inhabited the area, utilizing its fertile lands for hunting and gathering.

A post office opened in 1876, and by the 1880s, Ada grew as the county seat, driven by agriculture and rail connectivity. The Northern Pacific Railway fueled economic expansion, with wheat, grain, and livestock shaping the local economy. In 1906, the Norman County Courthouse was built after Ada retained its county seat status over rival Twin Valley, following Mahnomen County’s formation.

The town flourished with businesses, including general stores, mills, and the Ada Cigar Company. By the early 1900s, Ada had electric lights, waterworks, and a telephone system. The 1997 Red River flood devastated the town, destroying the high school, but Ada rebuilt with modern facilities, including a new school in 1998.

Ada’s cultural life includes the Norman County Fair, held annually since the early 20th century, and the Fun in the Flatlands festival, celebrating pioneer heritage. The town’s population peaked at 1,794 in 1990, with 1,703 residents in 2024. Agriculture remains central, supported by five large grain elevators and a strong farming community.

Historic sites, like the Norman County Courthouse and Ada Village Hall, are listed on the National Register. The Norman County Historical Society, founded in 1947, preserves artifacts at Prairie Village. Today, Ada blends its agricultural roots with community events, maintaining a vibrant small-town identity in the Red River Valley.
