History :

Perkins is a city in southern Payne County, Oklahoma. The population was 2,831 at the 2010 census, an increase of 24.6 percent from the figure of 2,272 in 2000. The name is derived from Walden Perkins, a congressman who helped establish the local post office. The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma is headquartered here. Though Perkins was settled in 1889, it celebrates Old Settlers Day around Sept 22. This is the anniversary of the Land Run of 1891. Being on the north side of the Cimarron River, it was one of the starting points for the Run of 1891. By January 1900, the Eastern Oklahoma Railway began service, establishing the town as an agricultural trade center.

Perkins was home to Frank "Pistol Pete" Eaton, author, scout, cowboy, deputy U.S. marshal, and living likeness of the Oklahoma State University mascot. Perkins is also home to the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. Because it possessed a good school system and a low cost of living and was close to Stillwater, the community has grown. Perkins is served by U.S. Highway 177 (originally State Highway 40). The Perkins Downtown Historic District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Oklahoma Territorial Plaza is a six-acre park located at 750 N. Plaza Dr, just south of the intersection of Highway 33/US 177. It is a joint project of the City of Perkins, the Perkins Community Foundation, and the Oklahoma Territorial Plaza Trust.
